Doc's Cellar

The Central Coast's Premier Wine and Beermaking Source
About Us

Doc’s Cellar was established in 1992 by Chuck Foreman, a blues musician and brewer at Covany Brewery in Grover Beach.  The name Doc came from a “Department of Corrections” shirt he was wearing while playing a gig one night, when people thought that DOC was actually his name.  Chuck was a trained cook and had been home brewing since the seventies.

The first store location was a very small shop on Price Street in Pismo Beach.  When home wine making became popular, more space was needed so the store moved into its present location in San Luis Obispo.

I was formally introduced to home brewing by a friend in 1997, who “loaned” me some equipment, then took me to the original Doc’s Cellar in Pismo Beach for more supplies.  I soon became a regular customer and when Chuck decided to move to Oregon in 2005, I bought the business.  A former employee of Chuck’s, Steve Autry, helped me through the transition and is still here much of the time as a consulting wine maker and brewer.  My son Conor helps out between classes at Cuesta College.

Our goals here are simple: we want to help you make the best beer, wine, cider, or mead that you possibly can.  We want your shopping experience here to be enjoyable and informative.  We try to stock a wide selection of the freshest ingredients we can find, quality and affordable equipment and supplies, books, and periodicals to further your knowledge in this fascinating and rewarding hobby.

Prost,
