Ballast Point’s Grapefruit Sculpin was voted #5 beer in America in the July/August 2016 issue of Zymurgy magazine.  This recipe was adapted from the recipe provided in the Zymurgy article.  A perfect beer for those long summer nights.  The blend of citrusy hops is seamlessly married with grapefruit zest to create an extremely refreshing IPA.  Yeast is not included with the kit, but a variety of recommended yeasts are listed below.

INGREDIENTS:

  • 9 lbs. Pilsen Liquid Malt Extract (boil)
  • 1 lb. Dextrose (boil)
  • 10 oz. Crystal 77L (steep)
  • 4 oz. Weyermann Carared (steep)
  • 5 oz. Dextrose (for bottling)
  • 1 oz. Cascade (60 minutes)
  • 0.5 oz. Chinook (60 minutes)
  • 0.5 oz. Cascade (20 minutes)
  • 0.5 oz. Chinook (20 minutes)
  • 0.5 oz. Cascade (5 minutes)
  • 0.5 oz. Chinook (5 minutes)
  • 1 oz. Simcoe (Flameout)
  • 0.5 oz. Chinook (Flameout)
  • Dry Hop: 1 oz. Simcoe & 1 oz. of Cascade

 

RECOMMENDED YEAST:

  • Safale US-05
  • WLP001 California
  • Or WLP090 San Diego Super Yeast

 

RECOMMENDED ADDITONS:

  • 1/4 cup of grapefruit zest from 6 grapefruits
  • Whirlfoc (15 min boil addition)
  • Yeast nutrient (10 min boil addition)
  • Grain Steeping bag
